How I tackle language learning
- Exposure: watching videos, movies, and listening to music.
- Target language content with English subtitles.
- Native videos with target language subtitles.
- Target language videos with target language subtitles.
- Gradually introduce new concepts via apps such as Duolingo and Memrise.
- Change languages of games and certain apps to fit in with the language.
- Begin listening to songs, following along with lyrics. When getting stuck on the pronounciation of a word, listen to it via other means then come back to it and repeat it till confident. (Recording myself singing it allows me to compare how far I've come and be aware of where I lack confidence)
- Use anki and physical flashcards practice spaced repition on phrases and vocabulary.
- Read a story. Note words that I don't recognise and only stop to search if I can't grasp the concept.
- Write a summary of the story. Search up the unknown words and;
- Write the definition
- Listen to the audio if I'm unsure
- Add them to flashcards
- Write a sentence that uses the word.
- With a friend and the help of Google Translate, we will speak to each other in our target languages. Encourages repetition and using phrases that fit your needs.
